Experiencing international business at the European Commission in Brussels

On 5 February 2018 the M.Sc. in Management and Engineering students visited the European Commission in Brussels. This work visit was part of the management course International Business. The European Commission is the EU’s politically independent executive arm. It is responsible for drawing up proposals for new European legislation, and it implements the decisions of the European Parliament and the Council of the EU.

During the work visit the students received a presentation on “The European Commission: the political executive of the European Union” by Mr. Simon Pascoe, Directorate-General for Communication. After the break the students attended an interesting presentation on EMU: challenges and perspectives by Mr. Lorenzo Rosati, Directorate-General for Economic and Financial Affairs and enjoyed some free time in Brussels.

Saravanan Oumabady, class representative, was glad with the opportunity to visit the European Commission (EC) in Brussels. “The work visit to the EC during the International Business course gave us the opportunity to understand practical implications of economic concepts learnt during the course in the real world. The EU, usually being in the center of the economic and political agenda globally and within the EURO area, proved to be an apt example for handling crisis and implementing policies aimed for financial and economic stability. The visit threw light on how the financial contributions to the EU are structured based on national GDPs. We were also able to learn that the EU has one voice even though the representatives have roots in various countries. A notion or bill goes through extensive discussions that happen every Wednesday, in order to be passed in the European Commission”.

Maastricht School of Management and RWTH Aachen University have no less than five collaborative M.Sc programs in Management and Engineering.
