Greenhouse development at Kyambogo University in Uganda

The "Strengthening skills and training capacity in the horticulture sector in Uganda project" is moving full speed ahead with the implementation of the greenhouse at Kyambogo University (KyU).

In 2021 the implementation of the greenhouse at KyU started and is making process. It is expected that the greenhouse can be handed over the the KyU management mid-January of 2022. Before the greenhouse will be handed over the AgroMax team will start the practical and hands-on training for technical staff and teachers from KyU and BAC.

So far AgroMax has conducted a technical survey of land allocated by the University, cleared 20,000 square meters of land and levelled 2500 square meters upon which the following facilities were set up; 2 greenhouses of 480 sq. m each with irrigation installed, hydroponics system of 100 sq. m and an open field drip irrigation system of 1 acre. Currently they are undertaking completion of a storage facility with a training shade to be utilized at the facility. As the project is being implemented during the COVID 19 Pandemic many challenges had to be faced including labor allocation, absence of students at the university and shortened working hours.

We look forward to finalizing the greenhouse and plan multiple activities linked to the greenhouse in 2022. It is planned that within this new facility among others Triple Helix activities, applied research, training of staff and students will take place.

About the project
This project titled “Strengthening skills and training capacity in the horticulture sector in Uganda“ is managed by MSM who together with consortium partners Q-Point B.V., Inholland University of Applied Sciences, Ecopolis Europa and Egerton University capacitate Kambogo University (KyU) and Bukalasa Agricultural College (BAC). The project aims at strengthening the skills to improve the horticultural situation in Uganda. This is mainly achieved via strengthening the educational situation at A-TVET level. The project focuses on three main output areas: curriculum review and development, institutional capacity development at KyU and BaC and the establishment of a triple helix horticulture innovation platform. Main activities of the project are curriculum development, module development, training of teachers in activating didactics, strengthening linkages with the horticultural practise, and stimulating horticultural entrepreneurship.
