Strategy, vision and mission – the main drivers for organisational change

Mr. Yazan Shbeilat (Jordan) had a clear reason for joining the programme “I wanted to develop my skills and knowledge to effectively manage organisational changes, adapt to market changes, implement new technologies and navigate changes in leadership. Furthermore, I wanted to advance my career and build a portfolio of skills in leadership, project management, communication, and strategic planning. And that is exactly what this programme has brought me.”

Ms. Djakie Oginda (Suriname) chose the Change Management programme out of her desire for personal growth: “I wanted to develop my leadership competencies because I have the ambition for a managerial position. I am currently working in an organisation where, in my opinion, management and leadership (as in many government departments) is not what it should be, more traditional with little room for innovation. On the other hand, I am also very aware of the fact that you can only help to improve an organisation if you know exactly how things should be done or, can be done differently. The tools provided in this programme and the skills I gained, will support me in reaching my goal.”

Ms. Modjadji Alidia (South Africa) responsible for strategic leadership within her organisation indicated that change management is new in her organisation: “I applied for this programme because Change Management, as a concept and activity to implement, is new in my organisation. As such the programme provided me with useful knowledge  as I am entrusted with leading strategy in my organisation.”

Throughout the week, the participants worked on group assignments based on different case studies. This hands-on approach was highly valued by Ms. Oginda: “For me the group assignments were the best. As mentioned before, some topics were quite new to me, so I was very happy that I could work together and learn a lot from  other participants who are already more experienced. Within our group, we worked on a case from the private sector, which was easier to me as I could make a link with my organisation. In short, I found the entire programme informative, focused and clear.

Besides challenging, Mr. Shbeilat found the assignment extremely rewarding: “It gave me the opportunity to apply the concepts that we learned in class in a practical setting. I particularly appreciated the way the assignment was structured to encourage collaboration and communication among group members. What I found most valuable about the assignment was the feedback that Professor Geert Heling provided throughout the process.”

Also for Ms. Alidia working on the group assignment was a great experience: “I enjoyed it a lot, it was fun and most of all it cemented the learning of what Prof Heling taught us.”

About the executive Change Management programme

Change is a constant factor in today’s business world. Organisations constantly have to adapt, to their external environment, but also make changes to their internal organisation. Projects  to improve efficiency, IT implementation projects, cultural change processes and organisational restructuring projects can run concurrently in one organisation at a point in time. This can put extreme demands on employees, who can act as either a barrier or catalyst for successful change initiatives. Organisational change requires a fundamental different approach to organisational processes compared with the traditional approach of management. Managers have to decide on the direction of change and guide their organisation through the process of transition.

The Change Management programme is designed by Dr. Geert Heling, Professor of Organisational Behaviour at MSM, with the aim to equip (potential) managers with the managerial skills and capabilities to lead organisational change processes.

Mr. Heling’s hands-on learning approach was much appreciated: “Dr. Heling’s teaching approach was incredibly engaging and interactive, which helped to reinforce the key concepts and principles of the change management programme. The real-world examples presented were highly informative and he was able to create a positive and supportive learning environment that allowed us to openly discuss our experiences and exchange best practices. I feel more confident and better equipped to handle changes within my organisation, and I know that others who have participated in the programme feel the same.” according to Mr. Shbeilat.

Ms. Alidia could not agree more: “Dr. Heling is extremely knowledgeable, and applies numerous aspects needed to make change a success – at individual and organisational level, informed by trends and developments and in line with the organisational strategy.”

Also Ms. Oginda was very positive about Dr. Heling: “His way of transferring knowledge was great, the information was above all clear and relevant. Furthermore, there was good interaction between him and us as participants. He has considerable experience and knowledge of organisational structures.”
