International workshop on social entrepreneurship

One of the many assets of MSM’s internationally accredited Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program is that it is available on almost all continents of the world and offers its participants access to a global network of business scholars, managers, and policy makers.

Two of our MBA groups, from Sana’a, Yemen and Bucharest, Romania, recently spent some challenging time in Maastricht as part of their European business attachment. They joined MSM’s residential MBA30 students for a workshop on Social Entrepreneurship.

With the participation of Wynand Bodewes from MSM’s partner institution the Maastricht Centre for Entrepreneurship (MC4E) and Jos Rooijakkers from the WakaWaka Foundation, the participants were invited to form small groups and come up with their own Social Entrepreneurship promotional plan. The winner, Ms Simona Serban (MBA participant from MSM Romania) was awarded a tuition fee for the Social Entrepreneurship Program at MMaastricht Summer School.

Participants look back on a fruitful and stimulating workshop. Professor Bodewes enjoyed interacting with the international audience at MSM: "Having so many participants from developing regions in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South America, explore what societal impact they could have through social entrepreneurship was so much more powerful (and inspirational) than what would occur with a group participants from developed nations".

Mr. Ammar Nasser Al-Aulaqi, a participant from Yemen who recently was appointed Deputy Minister of Water & Environment shared his satisfaction about from this European study attachment: “This course has been a great experience for all of us. For those who traveled out of our home country for the first time it was not only traveling that made it pleasant, but also networking! It is crucial nowadays to build your network and here at MSM I have met so many interesting people. I am sure this will bring mutual benefits in the future.

Our Romanian and Yemeni students have now headed back to Bucharest and Sana’a, respectively, to continue their MBA studies in their home country.

MSM offers MBA programs around the world in collaboration with partner institutes in Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. In April 2014, MSM hosted two MBA groups from partner universities in Peru and Azerbaijan. Besides classes and exams, the students’ agenda included work visits and a lively Q & A session with Mrs. Lilianne Ploumen, the Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation during her visit at MSM.
