Master of Management in Education degrees awarded in Zambia

Based on its decades of experience in building capacity in management education in emerging economies, MSM designed and launched a Master of Management in Education program. This cutting-edge management degree enhances leadership and management competences of current and future university middle managers – an area where more skills are needed given the expansion of higher education in emerging economies.

The first Africa-based cohort of this program graduated on 25 November 2014 in Lusaka. During a glamorous ceremony in Lusaka that was graced by the presence of the Zambian Minister of Education, Science, Vocational Training and Early Education Dr. Phiri, the degree was awarded to nine graduates.

These new graduates are academic staff members and middle managers of Mukuba University in Kitwe and Kwame Nkrumah University in Kabwe. Both universities have recently been transformed from secondary teacher training college to university with the mandate to deliver undergraduate degree education. The delivery of the Master of Management in Education program in Zambia by MSM is part of a larger Dutch funded NICHE capacity development project headed by CINOP that aims to support the two institutions in the transformation process. The Master of Management in Education program contributes to the project by enhancing the university management capacity and equips the individual participants with a master degree required to apply for a position in the newly formed universities.

In her graduation speech, MSM’s Dr. Rita van Deuren spoke about the challenges higher education institutions face and the relevance of quality leadership and management to adequately cope with challenges such as universities having to open up to the outside world, the growth of student numbers, quality and relevance of university education and limited public funding. She gave the participants the life-long assignment to use the newly acquired knowledge and skills for the benefit of the new universities and for the Zambian society in need of qualified secondary teachers.

Dr. Phiri emphasized the need for substantial growth in higher education to address the needs of the people of Zambia. He also announced the government will continue to continue the construction of more universities in all provinces of Zambia to meet the need for higher education. Finally, he thanked MSM, CINOP and the Dutch government by supporting Zambian higher education ambitions.
