Keynote in South-Africa: MSM Dean lecture on the BRICS

MSM Dean Professor Wim Naudé was recently invited to give a keynote address at a workshop of the TRADE Research Unit and WTO-Chair at the North West University in Potchefstroom, South Africa.

In his address entitled “A Fresh Look at Industrialization in the BRICS with Critical Comments for South Africa” Prof. Naudé compared South Africa to the other BRIC-countries: Brazil, Russia, India and China.  His analysis suggests that in contrast to China and India, South Africa has experienced de-industrialization and experienced stagnating innovation, investment and skills formation rates. In this the country is closer to Russia, where dependence on natural commodities and corruption and rent seeking has discouraged investment in industrial sectors.Lecture Brics 2

His lecture was based on a recent book, edited by Naudé, Szirmai and Haraguchi on the BRICS and published by Oxford University Press.
