Visiting Baosteel-friends in Shanghai

On 3 and 4 November 2015 MSM’s Dean, professor Wim Naudé visited the headquarters of China’s Baosteel Group in Shanghai. In a welcoming dinner hosted by the Secretary of CPC Committee and Member of the Board of the Baosteel Co., Ltd., Mr. Zhu Junsheng, the two organisations celebrated 13 years of unique partnership. During the partnership MSM has been providing specially designed training for middle and top managers of the group and arranging business-to-business visits in the Netherlands and EU Regio. In 2014, Mr. Zhu Junsheng visited MSM and opened the academic year.

Following an extended visit to the 29km2 Baosteel plant in Shanghai, including its dedicated covered export harbour on the Yangtze River, Professor Naudé met with some of MSM’s alumni filling senior management positions at Baosteel Co., Ltd.. These included Mr. Gui Qilin (environmental manager), Mr. Hu Xiaodong, (sales manager) Ms. Yu Hong (secretary to the board), Mr. Cunlin Wang (HR director), Ms. Huang Xialan (manager of the hot-rolling plant), Mr. Wu Bin (head of silicon steel) and Ms. Xui Wang (HR manager).

MSM and Baosteel agreed to deepen its collaboration in order to expand the delivery of management education for lifelong learning in the group, including hosting some lectures in Shanghai; to develop corporate level education in environmental management and green industrialization, to develop refresher education for its alumni in the group, and to offer opportunities for doctoral studies into the competitiveness of the global steel industry.

Baosteel Co., Ltd.,  employs over 41,000 workers, produces over 21 million tons of steel, and generates a turnover of around RMB 188 billion (US$ 30 billion).  It is China’s largest steel producer (producing 5% of the entire country’s output) and a Fortune 500 company. China as country already produces more than half of the world’s steel.
