Meet MSM’s faculty: introducing Dr. Stephanie Jones

Research is an integral part of the mission of Maastricht School of Management. We provide scientific knowledge to allow managers and entrepreneurs to make evidence-based decisions. To achieve our mission we encourage and support the research of our faculty members in a broad range of areas. MSM’s faculty members are passionate about what they do and tenacious in finding solutions to the toughest business challenges. Each month MSM will highlight one of its faculty members and this month the spotlight is on Dr. Stephanie Jones.

Let me introduce myself…
I’m Stephanie Jones, I’m from the UK, and my current position is Associate Professor of Organizational Behaviour at Maastricht School of Management. I am a teacher and supervisor of both MBA and DBAstudents. Besides teaching MBA classes in Maastricht, I travel to many other locations, such as Peru, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, China and Egypt. I hold a PhD from University College London and I have a Bachelor’s degree from the London School of Economics. I was only 25 years old when I gained my PhD so I can hardly remember what life was like without being “Dr. Jones”. During my career in both business and academe, I have always been involved in research and writing.

I started my career in corporate communications and journalism. As part of this job I researched and wrote my first book (a profile of a major London-based international trading company). After that I moved to Hong Kong and then China to work as a consultant and trainer, but always kept on publishing books and articles. Before joining MSM I was a partner of a UK-based consulting firm in a regional role across Europe, India, the Arabian Gulf and Australia.

The research I have been working on….
Since my PhD research I have researched and published over 30 books and hundreds of articles. These were mostly written with a practitioner angle and focussed on my teaching in the area of leadership, change management, Corporate Social Responsibility, culture, teams, Human Resources and especially within the broad area of Organisational Behaviour. I have published with SageMacmillanWiley and many other leading imprints from the UK and the USA.

I like to help others get started on preparing their work for international publications… What I like best is to publish jointly with my MBA and especially DBA students. I like to help others get started on preparing their work for an international publication. This is very exciting for them and it gives them a great sense of achievement. There is a lot of work involved in turning a thesis into an article, but I like to help point them in the right direction.

I am always excited to get on a plane and go to a new assignment…
Sharing the passion of learning and discovery, and the sense of achievement from gaining a life-changing qualification – this is what makes my work at MSM so inspiring. I love it to see how people develop confidence and enthusiasm through studying – especially in the multicultural teams we have at MSM and our global partners. At MSM I am one of the most international faculty members, given the fact that I have lived and worked in so many different countries, and my job is predominantly teaching and evaluating students across our global partnerships worldwide. I am always excited to get on a plane and go to a new assignment – even though I take over a hundred flights a year sometimes! MSM is such a unique institution, it is much more international than any other university or business school where I have worked in the past. Actually, it is even more truly worldly than any other academic unit I can think of – which I think is one of our great strengths!

The Research partnerships that I am active in…
I collaborate in several research partnerships: one of them is with Professor Jonathan Gosling who recently retired from the University of Exeter in UK. With him I have written three books, many articles and several conference papers. Besides Professor Gosling I want to mention our MSM partners worldwide, the MSM research conferences, the DBA supervisor group, the student alumni groups around the world and various editorial boards, mainly for journals within the Emerald group.

Where will I be speaking in the near future…
My colleague Jonathan and I have been invited to speak at a conference in a castle near Strasbourg in December, as part of a European strategy event – looking at where Europe is going – past, present and future. “300 Years of European Strategy” will be held at Klingenthal (France) on 29 November to 2 December. It’s for diplomats, military people and a few academics. We were invited because of our recent publications ‘Nelson’s Way – leadership lessons from the great commander’ and ‘Napoleonic Leadership – a study in power’.”

My most recent publication are..
During the MSM research conference last year I presented a conference paper on entrepreneurship in Vietnam which was a joint effort between myself and one of our MBA students, Rafael Masters, who is based in the MSM MBA program in Ho Chi Minh City. This was picked up last month by Channel News Asia in Singapore and published as an online commentary entitled “Ambitious and smart, youths in Ho Chi Minh are building Asia’s Silicon Valley”. In the last couple of years I have published several articles/working papers with current and recent DBA students.

In my spare time you can often find me..
I’m a keen sailor and designed a presentation about what makes a successful skipper of a sailing yacht in a major yacht race – and shared it with the Sports Management EMBA students. It was a big hit!
