The Big Unknown: A Journey into Generative AI's Transformative Effect on Professions, starting with Medical Practitioners

Maastricht School of Management (MSM), The Research Centre for Education and the Labour Market (ROA), Aga Khan University in Kenia and Universitas Indonesia are joining forces to dive into the transforming effect of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the medical sector.

Generative AI is a powerful tool with the potential to revolutionize many fields, including healthcare. Researchers are exploring how this technology can augment the knowledge and expertise of medical professionals, potentially leading to improved performance. However, the sensitive nature of medical decisions requires careful consideration.

With randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in laboratory settings in the Netherlands, Kenia, and Indonesia (150 participants per RCT), the research partners will assess the potential augmentative effects of generative AI technology on the core tasks of medical professionals in two occupations: general practitioners, and nurse practitioners.

In this research, MSM will mainly focus on how the cultural aspects within the Netherlands, Indonesia and Kenya as a context are important and possibly different in the use of AI within the medical profession.

The findings of this study can inform policymakers and is a first step for the responsible integration of AI in various countries and professions, not just healthcare.
