Indonesian Supervisory and Financial Development Board receive training in change management

A group of 16 senior civil servants from the Supervisory and Financial Development Board (BPKP) from the Republic of Indonesia followed a tailored program on Change Management at MSM on 12-16 May. In the framework of the bureaucratic reform of the Indonesian public sector, BPKP’s traditional auditing role has been expanded to include effective guidance, advice, and consultancy. For BPKP this development entails a major shift in focus and the need to reconsider its ways of working. The training program in the Netherlands was seen as a starting point in this complex process.

In Maastricht, the BPKP civil servants were offered a mixed program consisting in lectures by Prof. Geert Heling and field visits to the Royal Academy of Finance in The Hague and to the Municipality of Maastricht, where they received insightful presentations about change processes at national and local government level. The main take away for the participants was that change is a complex process that does not happens overnight. It often takes several years and involves a combined focus on content, people, and process.

Upon departure, the BPKP senior officers indicated that they considered the training week at MSM as a first step and welcomed input and support on implementation in Indonesia. “Yesterday we were clever and wanted to change the world. Today we are wise so we are changing ourselves,” they said.
