Dutch lessons learned for Indonesian Animal Logistics
From May 8 – 12, MSM organized a work visit on animal logistics for a delegation of academia and business representatives, the majority of which from IPB Bogor, the agricultural university of Indonesia. The visit was part of a multi-year Nuffic funded project aiming at strengthening education, research and cooperation on animal logistics in Indonesia.
The specific purposes of the visit were to explore how sector stakeholders jointly cooperate in the Netherlands as benchmark for a newly set-up multi-stakeholder platform in Indonesia, to observe how in the Netherlands animal logistics issues are addressed as input for policy development in Indonesia, and to learn from certification systems of training and education on animal logistics.
The delegation, facilitated by MSM expert Mr. Huub Mudde, visited agricultural education institutions, companies, the Netherlands inspection agency responsible for inspection of transport of live animals (NVWA), and the logistical heart of the Netherlands: the port of Rotterdam.

Mrs. Lesley Moffat, founder and coordinator of the NGO ‘Eyes on Animals’ explained vividly the challenges of more (awareness of) animal welfare in the sector. The delegation was impressed about the fine-grained system of registering, monitoring and evaluating movement of each single live animal within the European Union.
Relevant was the experience of Hunland BV, a big multinational livestock production and trading company, that investments in animal welfare measures had a positive financial return. This company, in togetherness with ‘Eyes on Animals’ has managed to convince the animal truck producer to make welfare-conducive adaptations to its trucks, becoming the norm for the sector in Europe.
