From Lima to Limburg: Peruvian top MBAs visit MSM

MSM’s collaboration with CENTRUM Católica Graduate Business School in Peru, the number one ranked business school in Latin America, has been ongoing for more than a decade.  Each year the Peruvian participants in our joint international MBA program spend their European study attachment at MSM. This year the participants will stay at MSM from 21 October until 12 December 2014, marking the first time that a full-time group spends such a long period in Maastricht.

For Joaquin Barreto, the value of this international experience lies in the fact that it allows participants to compare cultures, economies and lifestyles: “The opportunity to spend two months in Maastricht helps us become a more competitive MBA student because it helps us understand the need to change for good a lot of things in our daily activities. It is true that the Peruvian economy finds itself in one of its best moments, but the quality of products and services needs a more global perspective. This experience will change our lives forever, in a professional and personal way!”

In addition to the formal academic curriculum (consisting of courses including Business in the Global Arena, Marketing in Global Context, Leadership, Change & Responsibility, Finance in International Markets, Global Supply Chain Management, and Managing Cultural Diversity), the participants will visit and network with a number of local companies, among which Sabic and Greenport Venlo. At IKEA, the Swedish multinational specialized in designing and selling ready-to-assemble furniture, the Peruvian MBA participants had the opportunity to learn about the company’s marketing strategy and supply chain management.

The European study attachment also gave the students the opportunity to experience the interaction between politics and policymaking during a visit to the European Council in Brussels, only a short distance from MSM. There they attended two presentations by Luis Cuervo, Policy Officer, on the Role of the European Commission, and Internationalization of SMEs to Latin America: Policy and Instruments.

Mr. Jose Carlos Velizdescribes his study at MSM as an enriching experience: “The program allows you to merge the business academic experience and the experience of the teachers. In addition you get to know the culture and the key success factors of a country such as the Netherlands that is within the top economies in the world.”
