Training and exposure visit on strategic leadership and SGBV Investigative procedures
From 18- 22 November 2019 MSM organized a training and exposure visit for 6 Ugandan esteemed guests of the project End Impunity of SGBV (EIS). An interesting one-week training schedule was composed where the participants learned about strategic leadership and Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) investigative procedures in the Netherlands.
Project EIS strengthens institutional and training capacity of police and judiciary to end impunity of perpetrators and support survivors of SGBV in Uganda. MSM and the Regional Training Facility of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR-RTF) collaborate in supporting the Police Senior Command and Staff College and the Judicial Training Institute in research and training. This week’s training and exposure visit was specially designed for the core project team of Project EIS.
The program started with an Introduction of the Netherlands to get a better feeling of the country and its systems. This introductory lecture given by the Program Manager Dorus Evekink was followed by three lecture days on Strategic Leadership. Leo Kerklaan an experienced strategy professional and the Lead Trainer of the Strategic Leadership Program taught the Ugandan delegation amongst others on the role of management, strategic processes, key performance indicators and managing high performance teams. To understand how to apply the gained knowledge and skills directly to the daily practice of their organizations the participants worked on assignments that they presented on the final day of the program.
A guest lecture on the operations and investigations of the sexual crime unit of the Dutch Police was provided by two experts of the National Police in the Netherlands. They took the participants to MUMC+ Mother and Child department where the participants got an insight on the mental and physical examination that will be done on SGBV victims.
“The visit to the MUMC+ Hospital was so inspiring and educational. It opened my eyes on how the police needs to work with other professional partners to strengthen evidence collection in SGBV cases. The hospital was also so clean and not frightening. No smell of drugs or medicine. This can make the SGBV survivors more comfortable. The visit made me visualize the link between theory and practice in collection of forensic evidence and made our exposure visit more practical. We learned a lot and we will take it back home.” – Dr. John Kamya, Commandant at Police Senior Command and Staff College - Bwebajja
