Enhancing leadership and management capacities in Ethiopia
For Ethiopia the development of its higher education sector is vital for social and economic development. Maastricht School of Management (MsM) is steering a project to provide support to strengthen leadership and management in higher education in the country.
A delegation led by the director of the Ethiopian Education Strategy Centre (ESC), Dr. Aklilu Hailemichael, recently paid a two-week visit to MsM to discuss ambitious cooperation plans between ESC and MsM in the fields of science and research. In this, MsM is supported by an international consortium that also includes the International Centre for development oriented Research in Agriculture (ICRA)and the European Centre for Strategic Management of Universities(ESMU). The consortium is funded by Nuffic and the Dutch government.
Together with MsM experts, Dr. Hailemichael and his staff considered various development perspectives for ESC, among other topics. They discussed aspects of accreditation, quality assurance framework, labor market needs and performance indicators with Ms. Kati Kovacs (MsM’s Associate Dean for Quality Assurance and Services). During a meeting with Prof. Jo Ritzen (former Dutch Minister of Education and a former President of Maastricht University) they exchanged views on the educational system in Ethiopia and compared it to the Dutch system.
“The Ethiopian higher education system has shown a remarkable expansion in recent years and growth is expected to continue in the years to come,” said Ms. Rita van Deuren, PhD after a visit to Ethiopia in April 2013 as part of the University Leadership & Management Capacity Development Project led by MsM.
