MSM strengthens water, hygiene and sanitation teaching in Ghana
Recently, MSM trainers Miriam Frijns and Rita van Deuren delivered a custom made training program on active teaching and learning in Ghana. The objective of the training program was to strengthen teaching capacity at the Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Center Kumasi (RWESCK) of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. As such the training aimed to contribute to the quality of the RWESCK degree and professional training programs.
Approximately 25 academic staff members from various KNUST colleges and from RWESCK partner institutes in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Ghana participated in the training. They were informed on educational design, learning objectives, student learning styles and active forms of teaching and learning. They also experienced what active learning meant, as they worked on various group assignments during the training such as giving presentations and class simulations.
The RWESCK at the KNUST College of Engineering was set up under the World Bank African Centers of Excellence project which aims to establish Academic Centers of Excellence in higher education institutions across Africa. The core mandate of the Centre is to strengthen the human resource capacity in Ghana and the sub-region in areas related to water and environmental sanitation. This includes, but is not limited to offering PhD and MSc trainings, specialized short courses for professionals, joint research and students and faculty exchange with industry and academia.
